International Christmas market in Essen

The large, extensive Christmas market runs through Essen's entire inner city. It stretches from Willy-Brandt-Platz to the Theaterpassage and Kennedyplatz to Viehofer Straße. As part of the Essener Lichtwochen (Essen festival of lights), which is dedicated to guest country France this year, the Christmas market features illuminated themes. These illuminations are unique in Germany. The very special atmosphere is further enhanced by the avenues with Christmas lights, as well as the sparkling network of Christmas lights above the entire Kennedyplatz. The more than 250 stands adorned with Christmas decorations are enticing places to browse and shop. The numerous unusual gift ideas and culinary specialities from all over the world make the International Christmas market in Essen really live up to its name. As the market is situated in the heart of the inner city, you can superbly combine your Christmas shopping with a visit to the Christmas market. Over 700 department stores, boutiques and shops are great places for shopping and relaxing.

Medieval Market in Essen, at the Flachsmarkt

From 15th November to 22nd December 2015
The small Mediaeval Market on Viehofer Straße is an alternative to the hustle and bustle of the large markets. Let yourself be transported back in time to the 15th century and meet traditional blacksmiths, cloth makers and basket weavers. Predominantly handmade goods are sold here, but also snacks and meals made from mediaeval recipes are on offer. The demand for mead and kriek (cherry beer) is especially high. It's not just fans of the mediaeval period who will have a great time here.

Christmas Market in Dortmund

From 19th November to 30rd December
This Christmas market is one of the largest in Germany and is only 30 minutes away from Essen. Enjoy a stroll through the 300 stalls filled with Christmas decoration, delicacies and handicrafts. Our tip: try the typical Dortmund mulled wine.
